Walk for Dignity - Enough is Enough

Based on collective planning to respond to the verdict in the Trayvon Martin trial, organizations working with the Southern Movement Assembly are calling for immediate action with clear demands. We would like to invite you to collaborate and show the combined force of all our efforts to end genocide and build a just world.

We are planning a Walk for Dignity from Jacksonville FL to Sanford FL – July 22-27

Our goals are:

  • To bring our social movement forces together at this critical time
  • To sharpen our collective and long-term demands through a Southern Movement Assembly in motion
  • To exercise and show our people’s power

Our immediate demands are:

  • to demand the resignation of Angela Corey, FL State Atty
  • to demand the release of Marissa Alexander, sentenced 22 yrs for protecting herself

The Walk for Dignity will be a combination of walking 10-12 miles a day and caravanning between points. We will walk for five days, and hold an assembly every day at 5pm – we are working to set up live video-streaming for the assemblies so that people can engage and connect to the walk from points all over the Southeast and the country. Folks could join for the whole walk or on different days.

On Saturday, July 27, we will walk into Sanford to join others and rally to meet our demands.

Monday starts the Walk For Dignity: Enough Is Enough
(Walking at least 10 miles a day)

OVERVIEW:

The Walk will be a combination of walking routes and caravan drives along Highway 1 from Jacksonville to Sanford over 6 days next week. Churches and community groups have stepped forward to participate and support the Walk for Dignity through contributions of lodging, food, water, and meeting space. The Walk participants will stay overnight at different spaces. Teams will be organized to provide medical, legal, security, and communication support.

The Walk will start in Jacksonville on Monday, July 22 at 3pm at Hemming Plaza in downtown. We will march 10-12 miles a day, and stay in historic areas to connect to communities and engage about what’s happening and what we need to do to build our social movements for freedom and dignity.

BASIC ROUTE:

  • MONDAY: Jacksonville to St. Augustine
  • TUESDAY: St. Augustine to Bunnell
  • WEDNESDAY: Bunnell to a coastal Walk, ending in a site near Ormond Beach
  • THURSDAY: From the coast to Daytona Beach
  • FRIDAY: From Daytona Beach to Sanford
  • SATURDAY: Sanford Action

The Walk will be a Southern Movement Assembly in motion with delegations from states around the South, including TX, LA, AL, GA, NC, TN, NC, SC, and FL. Each night at 7pm the local communities will join the Walk participants in an assembly. We will attempt to live-stream the assemblies so that people in different parts of the country can participate.
